Journey of the Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0....so far!

I have had the lovely new Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 sitting on my sewing table for a week now.
I've sewn 2 quilt tops, 1 cushion cover, and a quilt backing piece. So far? It's brilliant!

I was a bit worried how I would cope with the change, and re adjusting my familiarity, but I have settled in perfectly well with the Pfaff. The machine, whilst being quite technical, is incredibly easy to understand, and everything is well laid out. I have now found that sewing doesn't feel like an effort. It's easy. And whilst it always had been relatively easy and simple, it now feels so calming and relaxing. I've always loved sewing, but I now find myself sitting in front of the sewing table even more than I used to. I'm dreaming up countless number of projects I want to do, and instead of feeling overburdened with the idea of so many things I want to create and sew - I'm keen and eager to fly through them all with the Pfaff.

Before I run away with my glee and enthusiasm, I'll let you know how I decided upon the Pfaff. I, like so many I'm sure, did a lot of my research online before even going to see the model itself. For some reason I had Pfaff in mind, and was keen to check them out. I read about the machine on the Pfaff website, and then my husband and I trawled the internet reading reviews from fellow bloggers around the world. Most came back in the negative for the 4.0. I was a little bit disappointed. It seemed like such a wonderful machine, but why were so many sewers having such grief with them?

The complaints that we came across online were as follows:

- The top loading bobbin has a dip where the plastic casing comes off for removal of bobbin. Sewers were finding this dip frustrating to feed fabric along smoothly.

- The machine beeps and lets you know when the bobbin is nearing it's end. Sewers found this also frustrating as the machine would stop and not let you sew anymore, even though there was just enough thread left to finish their seam.

- The machine would eat fabric when sewing 1/4" seams. This often occurred for sewers when they were starting a new seam, not strip piecing.

- People found the machine too heavy.

- The machine would not sew over bulky seams, and would skip stitches.

- Sewing with the 1/4" foot resulted in the fabric veering off to the left, and no longer inline.

- Some issues were had with the Free Motion Quilting.

- Amongst other things.

So, you can imagine my feelings when I read all these comments! I began to think that maybe the 4.0 wasn't for me after all. But my husband suggested we go have a look and see it in action anyway.
We went to one shop first, and whilst the lady was helpful and lovely, I don't believe she knew enough about the product to give a correct demonstration of the machine.

That was when we went to Liz's Sewing Centre in Boronia, after recommendation from my friend Louise at work, who consequently has a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0, but a model that is a few years older.
Instantly I felt comfortable and at ease in the shop, and the ladies we're incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. After some more research online, we found that a lot of the negative reviews were written back in the 2008 area. We seemed to think that perhaps Pfaff had taken on board some reviews and had fixed any problems.

Because when I tried the machine in both shops, I found it to work perfectly well. All the problems and concerns I had read about from other people were quickly quashed, as the machine did everything I asked of it. And even now as I have it home, it's doing everything perfectly well.

We folded up a piece of denim and the machine sewed over 4 thickness of the fabric without missing a beat. The stitches were perfect.

I have not had one bit of trouble with the fabric veering whilst sewing with the 1/4" foot. And that is even without a single hole plate (which was recommended as the only option available by others to sew straight.) The machine sews smoothly and straight with it's normal wide width plate that comes as standard.

Yes, the machine is heavy to lift, but is that really a problem? To me, that signifies that it has quality metal parts inside, and not just plastic cogs.

I have not found my machine to eat any fabric whilst starting a new seam. (The only time it did feel like it wanted to eat the fabric was this morning - and that was entirely user error. I had just cleaned the bobbin casing, and didn't have the bobbin sitting correctly in it's spot. As soon as I corrected this, the machine sewed on perfectly.) It was recommended that sewers use a single hole plate to fix this 'fabric eating machine', however I have not had the need to. I can start before the fabric, and the machine just ticks along. (Am I sounding like a Pfaff saleswoman yet???!)

Yes, the machine does beep when the bobbin is nearing the end. Which is fantastically brilliant. It means I won't sew around a whole quilt for the binding, and then realise at the end - oh, pest. I need to do it again. The machine also lets me keep sewing until the bobbin is completely empty. I'm not sure if this is a particular thing that Pfaff fixed from the previous model. If so - well done. It's great!

The Bobbin 'Dip.'

Whilst maybe not the greatest design thought, I have not found it to be an issue as yet.

The machine does have a dip in the casing where the top loading bobbin sits. I could imagine that this could be frustrating for some people, but I have not found it to be an issue yet. The only thing I have found so far with it, is when I am sewing two rows of sewn squares together for example. And say, one row of squares has the seams ironed flat to the left. If that row of left-pressed seams is on the bottom as I sew it, the seams do hit the dip, and tend to pop the other way. Now, that could be a problem if you let it be one. I however, have quickly adjusted to just lifting the fabric slightly as it comes to the join, and letting it ride over the dip. And if that doesn't work, all it takes is a quick poke of your finger to flip the seam back the right way. It's no trouble for me, and if that is the only quirk of the machine that may be frustrating - then to me - it doesn't matter one bit!

Possible frustration with the Bobbin Dip would be a left pressed seam getting caught.

As for the Free Motion Quilting, I have only had a short play of that so far. When I tried it at the first shop I went to, we had great trouble getting it to work well, and to not skip stitches. My husband and I put that down to the thread used, to an old needle, to incorrect tension, and not enough knowledge. I then found out, when I went to the other shop, that we had the wrong foot on at the first shop. No wonder it didn't play properly.

So, at the second shop, the lady set it up for me and showed me how to do it myself. And I was able to tick along quilting just fine. And since I've had it home, I have had more time playing with it. I have found that I need to adjust the tension to sit on 5.2, and to adjust the pivot height of the foot to 2. This may only make sense to you if you have a 4.0 sitting in front of you, but so far, that's what I have found to work best.

Things I love about the machine so far?

The built in thread cutter.
How did I ever survive without one for so long?!
I can piece something, press the button, have my threads cut, and be done in a matter of seconds. It's brilliant! This is one very reason why sewing feels so easy and simple now!

The Automatic presser foot lift.
I was concerned I would struggle with this. The machine does not have a lever to lift your presser foot up and down. Instead it automatically puts it down for you when you start sewing. You can either program it to lift at the end, or just easily press a button. I have quickly fallen into the habit of using this function, and I really like it. I almost feel rather lazy.

The stitches.
I have 222 stitches I can choose from, including 3 different alphabets. The stitches look beautiful, and I'm greatly looking forward to playing with them in the future. You can also adjust the width of the stitches, which I think is pretty nifty.

The 1/4" stitch.
It's perfect. No, really. It is perfect. I always thought I was sewing a pretty near on perfect 1/4" stitch. But this machine really does it accurately. I have done a few tests now, and yep - every time! The only piecing I have done so far is squares, and the seams butt and match in perfectly well.

The smoothness.
Oh gosh, it's smooth. I know that sounds silly, but it really is. It just slides along so beautifully. I like the gentle whirring sound it makes, and I like how it feels like nothing is an issue for this machine. It feels simple.

The bobbin.
I love that it lets me know when it's getting to the end. So very clever and will save me a great deal of frustration!

The style and look.
I know. It doesn't really matter how a machine looks. But this one sure is pretty. I like how big and wide the machine is. It feels solid. It has a very wide throat, which will be great for quilting, and a nice wide sewing space. I also like how wide the sewing foot is. I wouldn't have thought that would matter here nor there, but it's nice to have a wide surface to put your foot on and find easily under the table.

It's a Pfaff.
My mother has a 30 something year old Pfaff, that is a jolly weight to lift, and a solid beast to use. I learnt to sew on that machine when I was 5, and it is still running perfectly well to this day. It's got German origins, which I also have. I feel an interesting connection and attachment with Pfaff. Some strange romantic notion from my childhood obviously.

In general.
I really like it overall. I have greatly enjoyed my week of sewing so far. I feel like I'm getting to know the ins and outs of the machine, and figuring out how to use it properly. I think with any machine, and any brand, there can always be 'lemons,' and one should always research carefully before making any purchase. I felt like we were taking a risk with buying the Pfaff initially, but I am ever so glad we did. It will be interesting to see how our journey progresses and where it takes us. But for now - I have a wonderful new sewing machine that I thoroughly enjoy using, and consistently look forward to using every day. And that is money well spent.

A follow up review will come in a few months!

Please note: This review is entirely my own opinion based solely on a weeks worth of use with the Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0. I am sure some people have had some issues with this particular model, and I in no way want to make light of their struggle, or highlight particulars. But I felt that the Pfaff is a great machine, and deserves an honest review from someone who is very happy with it. I'm sorry that it hasn't been so happy a journey for others. Hopefully Pfaff have simply altered from previous models and I am fortunate enough to have an updated version.
Please, if you are looking at getting a Pfaff, or any machine for that matter, always do your research and talk with the professionals first before making a purchase. I am extremely happy with our purchase, and I think I will be for a long time to come.

Cheese on toast?

I think not! Not for my husband, who bought me a new sewing machine! No, the day arrived and so did the sewing machine, and instead of playing on it non stop - I cooked my husband a lovely dinner of creamed spinach and eggplant, cous cous and salad. No cheese on toast for Mr Green! I think he was a bit surprised when he came home!

So on Tuesday I got the most lovely phone call from Liz's Sewing Centre in Boronia, to tell me that the machine had just arrived. Literally just arrived. The delivery man hadn't even left yet! But she knew how excited I was about my new baby, and called me straight away. Now, that is fantastic service. If you're a local, and looking for a new sewing machine, or wanting a quality service, check them out. The ladies are lovely and incredibly helpful.

So of course, I rushed down as soon as I got the call, and bought the new baby home. I'm feeling like she needs a name, but I am yet to come up with a suitable one. I think I'll need to get to know her personality first!

So I spent a good portion of my Tuesday afternoon gently opening the box and lifting her out, reading the manual, and inspecting all the parts and bits and pieces. Oh, talk about such fun! So far all I have attempted to sew are some stitches on scraps, and a practice of the Free motion Quilting. There is a lot to this machine, and I know it will take me some time to get a feel of it, and learn how to use it properly. But, so far so good! I'm looking forward to writing some reviews on My Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 shortly. I know I found it helpful reading reviews online by other bloggers of certain machines, so hopefully someone might find my reviews useful in time to come.

Just out of curiosity, for anyone who is reading and might comment, what kind of sewing machines do you use? I have found that the most common machines I hear people having are Brothers, Berninas and Janomes. Any good or bad experiences?

Till then, I'm off to go and sew! I have three quilts to finish, so my new baby better be prepared for a workout!

It's a beautifully sunny Sunday as I write this. A gentle breeze is floating around outside, and I can hear a wonderful chorus of bird calls. There is something so lovely about lazy Sundays, spent at church, home and with family.

Over the past few months, weeks and especially days, I've been planning a new step for Missy Mack. I've had new opportunities open up, and an inspired new direction take my imagination. Things are still in the planning stages, but I hope to be up and running in my new venture very shortly. So, some changes will take place on my blog during this time. And I'm excitedly looking forward to starting this new season for Missy Mack.

One rather huge and exciting change - is that I'm the proud owner of a new sewing machine! I have had a wonderful journey with my current machine, a Brother NX 200 Quilters Edition, and I'm not saying goodbye to her just yet. She has served me faithfully and was a wonderful 21st present from my parents. We have sewn numerous quilts and items together, and I have greatly enjoyed using her. She will and always shall remain a treasured part of my 'sewing fleet.'
I am simply stepping up to a new and very clever machine. My darling and wonderful husband has spoiled me with a late Christmas present. I don't know of many men who will sell their precious wine collection, only to devote the money for their wife. But, my Simon has.

After much consideration and research, we settled on the Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0.
I will type up a more detailed post of the journey it took me to decide upon the Pfaff, and of my experience with it so far. But I am yet to have her, and hopefully she will arrive at the shop in the next few days. I'm greatly looking forward to playing with my Pfaff and getting to know all her quirks and features. The day the Pfaff does arrive, I think Simon is expecting cheese on toast for dinner! And yes, I may just be too busy playing to cook!

So, a most heartfelt thank you to my wonderful husband for his generosity and kindness - I love you! And, here's to new beginnings!

Too many leftovers...

Well, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas time, and I'm assuming, like myself, that you are all over the leftovers. I've eaten enough ham, and pudding, and potato salad, and it's time to get back to some salads!

We had a beautiful Christmas time with family, and as usual, the day goes so quickly, and then it's all over for another year. But we have some lovely memories, and presents, of course!

Yep, not long now and it will be Christmas Day! I am very much enjoying Christmas this year, as it's our first Christmas as a married couple! So I have been busy decorating the house, and baking yummy treats like fruit mince pies, and gingerbread today (if I get myself into gear!)

As always, Christmas tends to sneak up quite quickly, but I'm feeling somewhat organised, and just enjoying the lead up. Sometimes I think I love the week or two before Christmas more than the actual day!

So, I made a table runner and place mats this year. I used the lovely "Countdown to Christmas" range by Sweetwater. I also made some funky bunting, that is hanging in our kitchen. I love it! And the best thing - it only took half an hour or so to make. One has to love a quick bunting!

Our tree is up, and looking gorgeous. Well, it wasn't up, or gorgeous last night for that matter. We came home to find it had toppled over and landed on the floor. A wonderful surprise of water, pine needles, baubles and dirt at 9:30pm at night. Never mind, the house still smells lovely from all the pine!

Since we will be having lunch and dinner at our respective parents homes on Christmas Day, I decided to cook Simon our own Christmas dinner, a few days early. I had such fun, and managed to create an amazing and beautiful meal in 2 hours. We had roast pork with crackling, roasted and glazed peaches with feta, vine ripened tomatoes with mushrooms and spinach, roast potatoes and a cranberry punch to top it off. A fabulous and wonderful meal. And yes, can you tell I'm a bit proud of myself??

Lately I have been playing around with some delicious 30's fabrics...

And with bags... and toys. And I have been busy thinking, planning and talking about teaching sewing classes with the lovely Kay, from Crumbz here in Healesville. All such exciting stuff! Hopefully I'll have some further thoughts and plans in the New Year.

So, I shall stop prattling away, only to wish you all a wonderful and merry Christmas time! May it be a safe one for all your family and loved ones. And remember - Jesus is the reason for the season!

A button or two...

There was much excitement at our house on Friday morning.

Our first parcel arrived in the post, and it was the best kind of parcel a button loving girl could recieve.

Inside were all the fixings to make fabric covered buttons!

The dishes, vacuuming and ironing were quickly put aside and forgotten.

And it wasn't long before the sweetest little red and white polka dot button appeared.

He was soon joined by a matching friend.

Who were also soon joined by even more friends.

I'm hooked.

A quilt for Holly

To me, the colours in this little cot quilt can't help but say, 'girly, pretty and summer.' The mix of the pinks, lemons and a touch of tangerine orange are bright, cheerful and happy. And I love putting bright colours together with white. It's simple. It's fresh. And I like it. A lot.

This cot quilt was started all the way back in July, and was finally finished yesterday with the label being sewn on. My gorgeous cousin, Louise, who hails from South Australia, asked if I could make a quilt for her to give as a gift. Her youth pastors were expecting a baby girl, and Louise thought a quilt would be a perfect gift.

I mostly had free rein as to design and colours, but as long as some pink was used, and perhaps some birds. And I had till the middle of November to have it done by. So, no rush! Well, baby came early! So, sadly the quilt wasn't ready in time for Hollys' delivery, but at least she won't know that!

I had a great time playing and perfecting pinwheels. Well, maybe not perfecting exactly. But at least, trying to perfect them. I found quite a few good tutorials online for pinwheels, and figured out some tricks on my own to get my points to match. The birds were appliqued using the blanket stitch on my Brother sewing machine. So much quicker and easier than doing it by hand.

The quilt was quilted by the wonderful and talented Clair on her long arm machine. She always does a brilliant job, though she doubts herself terribly! The quilt is bound with remaining scraps and white, because as most regular readers will know, I love a good scrappy binding.

All up, I'm rather pleased and happy with the final result. It's pretty. It's pink. And I hope Holly and her parents like it and get many years of enjoyment from it.

An aside note, I've been rather ill lately. First a flu, then a persistent tummy bug, and again, the tummy bug with headaches and immense exhaustion. For a week there I was in bed pretty much every afternoon, which is so unusual for me. Hopefully it won't last too long - it's taking up valuable sewing time!

Always love a swap!

Over the last few months, some fellow staff members and I from work have been participating in a swap. It was a paper bag swap (meaning, add some fabric into a paper bag, get someone elses bag at random, make them an item and hand it back. Etc.)

So I was quite happy when I recieved the lovely Jenny from work, as I knew instantly what I was going to make for her. She being a Bronwyn Hayes fan, I planned on doing a stitchery and putting it on a canvas.

Jennys two fabrics, from the Sophie range by Moda, were perfectly yummy for the task and everything came together beautifully. Well, except it ended up being a wall hanging and not a canvas, but nevermind! I think I much prefer it this way.
Plus, it gave me an excuse to do some random stipple quilting, which I always enjoy.

The stitchery was a free download from Brownwyns blog, featuring her trademark cat, Brutus. I coloured in the picture with my Prismacolour pencils, and then stitched around it. And from there I just built up the wall hanging till it was larger enough. I love it. And most importantly, Jenny loves it too!
I'll be back with some photos of what I recieved from the talented Maree - it's a fab bag!

My mother in law also loved it! So I stitched her another version, and popped it in a frame. Would make an ideal quick gift as I did the stitching in about 3 hours from start to finish.

Some new fabric love, and a finish

Just had to share some of my recent purchases.

I dare anyone to walk past and not think these turtles and trees are the cutest things around. They just define cuteness in my book. And of course, being the selvedge collector I am, my heart went flip flops when it saw this one.

Yep, this is "Little Apples" by Aneela Hoey for Moda, and it's just the cutest!

Now, if you haven't heard of Umbrella Prints, it's a South Australian textile company producing some gorgeous and yummy prints. Check out their blog and website for some more eye candy, but here are three of their lovely fabrics. I just adore the colours - so fresh, so yum.

And finally? Well, with Christmas only *counts* nine and half weeks away *gasp* I'm getting into the festive mood. This is such a sweet range of fabric, and I'm looking forward to making a lovely table centre from these goodies.

And to finish off my little post - a little quilt! I made this quick and easy cot quilt last week, specifically as a donation for our church Youth Group fundraising dinner. It was auctioned off and sold for $200, so that's pretty sweet!

I really like the colours and fabrics in this quilt, and had quite an enjoyable time making it. It's a simple stacked coins pattern, which looks great. But I think I love the border the most - it's just too darn cute.

Home is wherever I'm with you

Well, today marks three and a half weeks since Simon and I became home owners! And we are thoroughly enjoying our lovely little home so far. As you can imagine, we have been quite busy unpacking boxes, and sorting things out. The house doesn't have much storage space, so until we can arrange more permenant homes for items, most things are still living in boxes for now.

Already plans are in full swing for alterations we wish to make to the house and property. Simon and I often talk excitedly about what we would like to do - it's great fun! I'm sure that not even half the things on our 'to do list' will ever be accomplished, but it's great to dream and imagine.

Something that I was quite excited about was setting up my sewing room! Simon and I had a gift voucher to use at Ikea, so last Saturday we made the trip down to our local store (about an hour away.) I am an Ikea novice, so it was a fantastic experience for me! I had a lot of fun walking around and looking at things. But I was extremely excited when Simon and I purchased a beautiful Beech wood table with height adjustable legs for my sewing room. It's just brilliant and exactly what I wanted. It's been great fun setting things up! I still have alot more plans in store for the sewing room, but it's a slow work in progress. Hopefully I'll have further updates to show you soon!

And just to finish on a further sewing note - here is a quilt I finished a few weeks back. I actually had this one quilted by my work mate Clair back in February, but for some reason I was a bit busy, you know, getting married! So I finally sewed the binding on, and ta-da!

I love the colours in this quilt, and particularly LOVE the backing. Oh my gosh. How cute are big white polka dots!

As much as I love this quilt, it will probably be for sale soon. And for those interested, the range of fabrics in this quilt is an oldie, "Objects of desire," by Sandy Jervais.

Excuses, excuses...

We had a sermon about 'excuses' a week or so back at our church. Simon and I have since been teasing each other about the excuses we come up with in life. And when you actually stop and think about all the excuses you make - you realise there are alot!

So now that I have come to sit down and quickly write a post for here I was about ready to fire off some excuses for my lack of entries.

They were to go along the long of.... "I have so much to show you all, but my photos are on the camera.....I can't access a computer regularly at the moment....I'm so busy (the usual one...)"

So I won't bore the world with my excuses, but will only say that exciting things are happening in my life at the moment! Apart from the fact that I am now nearly 15 weeks into a wonderful and happy marriage, I have been having a great time running the home. I have really taken to cleaning and cooking and shopping for food. I know that all you older, wiser women will be quick to laugh and tell me that the novelty will wear off soon, and perhaps it will. But for now - I'm really enjoying it! I have also been able to do a lot of sewing lately, and I have quite a few exciting endeavours coming up shortly.

But my main exciting news is that Simon and I have bought our own home! Our very own home! We are incredibly happy and thrilled to bits. It is a lovely little house, and has been very well looked after by the previous owners. We are literally counting down the days till settlement - which is now only 8 days away!!! Once we are moved in and settled, I'll be able to set the computer up and show you lots of goodies!

Till then, my very good friend from work, Mary, and I have set ourselves a challenge. We are going to have a try at completing the 'Sylvias Bridal Sampler" quilt from the Elm Creek Quilts fame. I have not done much hand piecing, but I'm looking forward to learning more and testing myself. We have both decided to use 1930's style fabrics - yum, yum!! I have always been a big 30's fan, so I'm looking forward to playing with it!

On the 14th of May, I became a wife to a wonderful and amazing man. With rain bucketing down in the leadup to the day, we were blessed with a clear and beautiful day. It was an early start for us girls (4:30am!) and a not so early start for the boys. But, after alot of preening and hair spray, I arrived at the church (slightly late!) to marry my gorgeous man.

And what a lovely and beautiful ceremony it was, and such a fantastic day. We couldn't stop smiling the minute we saw each other, and we enjoyed every moment of the day.

We had some photos taken at Maroondah Reservoir here in Healesville, and then a private and small reception at a friends house in Yarra Glen.

There were alot of handmade elements to our day, from the order of service booklets (with a fabric binding!) to personalised stitchery hoops hanging from the end of each pew. I drew all the designs, and then asked some of the girls at work to help me stitch them. The end result was perfect, and all the stitcheries will then be used to make a quilt.

I also made fabric bunting to decorate, the pins for the men, my headband, the flowers for the cake, and table runners for the reception, amongst many other things! I had so much fun! Also, the bridesmaid dresses were sewn by the mothers of my two bridesmaids - a huge job, but a wonderful result.

The end result? A wonderful, beautiful and happy day. One that Simon and I will cherish and remember for a very long time to come.

Well, this is what happens when you plan a wedding in 3 months - your sewing blog suffers greatly! Yup - 3 months. Things have been incredibly busy here with decisions to make, dresses to fit, flowers to find and food to organise. But, in literally 5 days, the 14th of May, it will all be here - and I will be married!!

I know it all sounds cliche, but I seriously can't believe that I will be getting married in 5 days time. The past few months have gone by so quickly, and I'm still wondering what on earth happened to April. I know I had a birthday in there somewhere, but that was about it.

So I thought I best put up a quick post to say that yes, I am still alive, and yep - the wedding is soon! I will of course be on my honeymoon for a few weeks after the wedding, but once we get back and things settle down to normality, I have great plans for this blog and my business. And I'm so keen to get back to some sewing! Sadly my machine has decided to die on me, and I'm currently using my mothers 35 year old Pfaff. I think I may be in need of a new machine if my one can't be repaired. I think the motor has packed it in. :(

But anyway, I just wanted to quickly share with you my latest publication. Whilst I knew my quilt was going to be in the May edition of Homespun Magazine, I had no idea it was going to be on the cover. And look, there it is!

Let me introduce you to "Cherish," a beautiful and simple quilt in gorgeous blues and greens. I LOVE this colour palette - it's so soothing and soft. "Cherish" has quite an interesting history, and the one photographed is not the first quilt I actually made. The first quilt was made and perfected, and then ruined by a 'professional quilter' who did a ghastly job on the quilting. I was devastated, and with 2 weeks to the deadline I started the whole project again. And thankfully, the most wonderful Clair Acres, quilted the quilt for me in a few days, and for free. Clair - you are a lifesaver - and you did a beautiful job!

So, it was quite a relief to finish the quilt and send it off, and also to see it in the magazine. Oh, there's also a profile on me aswell - mega exciting!!

A rather big one actually!!! Simon and I are engaged!!

It's been a rather busy and an amazing time these last few weeks - and I think it's only going to get busier from now on. Whilst Simon and I had been talking about marriage for a while now, he got done on his knees and asked the all important question on the 3rd of February. Of course, he recieved a very enthusiastic yes!! We are both so excited about getting married and sharing in this wonderful journey called life together.

So, now the wedding plans start! We are planning a short engagement, and have set a date for in May. So - guess who is rather busy making invitations and shopping?! And I'm loving it all along the way of course! So, this sewing blog may turn a bit 'wedding-ish' for a few months! It's so exciting!

Our first Valentines Day together was spent having a picnic dinner in our favourite park, and talking about the future. Simon loved one of his gifts from me - a giant handmade chocolate heart freckle! The poor heart didn't last long though, and is now looking a bit 'half' hearted.

And I suppose I better show a scrap of fabric somewhere in here. This is another of my most recent loves - hessian. Love the texture and the feel. I think it may feature somewhat in the wedding. :)

New Year...New Quilts.

Well, it was a wonderful christmas season here, and much fun and food and festivities were shared by all. Probably a bit too much food. But that's always the way at Christmas, and I'm now doing a little diet to shed some unwanted kilos.

I was doing quite a bit of sewing before and during the christmas break. A week or so before Christmas I decided I wanted to make my boyfriend a quilt as a present. I was feeling horribly sick at the time of this decision mind you. But I'm the type of person, that when I am sick I actaully have to do something. I cannot stay in bed and just lie there. So I dragged out a Pure layercake I had bought months ago, and all I could manage in my sorry state was sto sew large squares together. But I think it looks great, especially when the borders were added later. It's a bit simple and plain, but I like it - and the main thing? The boyfriend loves it too.

I carried on a circle theme with the quilt, strangley enough, and quilted large circles in each block. I'm yet to take some better pics of it, but will do so soon.

I have also been busy sewing a comissioned quilt for a lady, Cathy. Her friend is sick with cancer, and she wanted a quilt to be made with photos. I haven't actually done a photo quilt before - but gosh it's easy. I used the Matildas Own Photo paper, and it was quick and simple and no fuss. I decided to print the photos in black and white, and I like the classy look it gives the quilt. I stipple quilted the whole thing, and I'm really happy with the finished quilt.

Cathy picked it up today, and loves it. So, I count that as a job well done!

I actually really like doing comissioned quilts and items for people. I don't feel much stress or pressure, and I enjoy the challenges.

I must say though, I'm feeling rather sombre tonight as I post this. I can't help but feel sick at the pictures on the news of the devastating floods in Queensland. The footage of this sheer torrent of unrelenting water flooding streets and destroying homes and lives is horrible.

I know I will be donating money to assist in the rebuilding, and I'm encouraging all to do the same. I'm sure alot of people from Queensland, who are now affected by these floods, were some of the kind and wonderful people who donated money to my area and region after the Black Saturday bushfires. I'd love to give them something back.

I'm back!

Wow. It really feels so good to be back online! I've been able to use my little laptop for quick checks of emails - but had no access to my photos etc. What a strange generation of people we are - we get so lost without a computer and internet connection!

But at least I've had some quality time for sewing -so that's a good point!

We have been experiencing a lot of rain here lately - and I mean, a lot. It's been such a wonderful blessing and a lot of dams and lakes are now full - or in some cases, overflowing. It's great to see the grass looking so lush and green in the paddocks too.

This photo below is of the Yarra River in Healesville, looking a bit swollen and flooded.

Well, I'm amazed that Christmas is literally next week. Is anyone else scratching their head, wondering, "Where did October go to?"

Thankfully I think I'm somewhat ready for Christmas. I have nearly every present bought and made, and only a few bits to go. That being said - we still don't have the christmas tree up... or a wreath on the door...or lights flashing on the verandah... or table decorations made.... but at least the presents are nearly done!

Anyway - on to the sewing part!

I made the two aprons pictured above for work. A few of us girls like to wear aprons at work, as they protect our clothes, and have handy pockets for random stuff. My previous apron was looking a bit sad and 'well loved,' so it was definately time for an update. The brown apron is made using fabric from the "In the Pink II" range that was also used for the Homespun Breast of Friends quilt. The bright and colourful blue apron is made using the gorgeous fabric from Mellys new range, "Where the wind blows." Love it. Oh, and for inquiring minds - the pattern for the above aprons are from the fantastic book, "A is for Apron."

I made this little blue wallhanging quite a while ago, but have only just got around to taking a good piccy of it. I used the free motion foot on my machine for the flowers, and the stipple quilting. I love the simplicity of this little quilt.

A few weeks ago, my church, St Johns Anglican, held a local fete in town. As usual, I had completely forgotten about it, and left everything to the last minute. So I made these super quick, and rather cute, little bags to sell at the fete. And they are literally super quick. Like, really quick. It was so much fun!

This photo below is of a doily that I turned into a quilt label I made for a recent quilt. I love it! I'll be able to share this quilt with you in May next year - which seems ages away!

So, I have quite alot of other things to show and share, but I'll save it for another post soon. Things that will be coming soon are:

- Info on the Stringybark Farm BOM (finally!!!!)

- Some finished photos of my "For these I give thanks" quilt made by ladies around the world.

So, we've been having a few wee computer hiccups here of late. My rather old computer finally decided that it's life had come to a sad and miserable end. It was still operable, but the old beast was determined to make life impossible. From the time of pressing the 'on' button, to being able to access the internet - ten minutes would literally pass by. Seriously.

So a new computer was bought, and my goodness - within 30 seconds I can be on the internet! It's amazing! And then I find out that everyone else has been enjoying such normal things like this for years. To me - it's quite an amazing experience, and such a novelty!

But, until I clean out the study and get rid of the old beast from the computer desk, the lovely new (insert - incredibly amazing) computer is sitting unplugged on the billiard table. Just waiting. So I am relinquished to using an old laptop at the moment. Hence - the lack of posts, and no photos of all my latest things.

Gosh, the weather has been so lovley lately. I don't know about any of you, but I was starting to get a little tired of winter and constantly feeling cold. I feel like I am coming alive, now that the weather is warming up. And I've been spending as much time outside as possible. My boyfriend, Mr Green, and I went to the Tesselaar tulip festival a few saturdays back, and had a wonderful time walking through the riot of colour. Being of the crafty/creative variety, I love colour - and I'm sure you all do too. So I just had to share a few piccies.

In my absence from blogging, I have actually been doing alot of sewing. Which has been wonderful. I can't actually show you the main project that I have been working on for a few months. That's a secret *shhhh.* But here is a wee little pic. I'll be able to show you this beautiful quilt next year sometime. Which sounds so very far away, but I'm sure it will be here soon.

Now, this bag I made specially for the Immerse Stitching Day.

I'm sure you ladies will all understand that you can't go to a sewing day with just any bag.

I mean, it has to be a bag you've made, right? And yes, there may have been a bit of teasing that I used these particular fabrics. Fabrics which just happen to be from Rosalie Quinlans Grandmothers Flower Garden range. But really, I used them because I like them. Honest. The fact that Rosie spotted my bag on the day and admired it is just a mere coincidence.

Another thing people must know about me - is that I love selvedges. I know this may seem strange to some people. But I do. I love them! The little coloured dots. The writing. *sigh*

So I have made items in the past using selvedges, but I had a recent play with them again. This time making a new needlecase. Love it.

And finally. (Well, not really actually. I still have more projects to show you, but I'll save them for another day.)

How lovely is this gorgeous Isso Ecco fabric from Lecien? It is 80% cotton and 20% hemp, and just gorgeous to sew with. I have been making a super, super (seriously, super) easy quilt with it. I think I'll call it my 'cheat quilt,' or perhaps my 'make a quilt top in 15 minutes,' quilt. Anyway, I'll be back to show it to you when I've finished sewing the last of the binding on.

Gosh. I feel so behind and slack.

It's been so long since my last post. How sad!

Rosalie, sharing some tips at the Immerse Stitching Day.

And it's not like I don't have things to share with you ('cause I do,) - I've just been so busy, it's crazy. But hey, it's my blog, and I can post whenever I want to - right?!

So, over the next few days, I'm going to share lots of new goodies and projects I've been working on lately. I'm also going to issue a challenge (ohh...intriguing!), and maybe start a new swap (since there was some interest in the paper bag swap...hereafter dubbed - 'In the bag' swap.)

What I accomplished for the day. I worked on Leannes project.

But, I know I'm awfully late in posting this - but I had a FAB day out at the Immerse Winery Stitching Day, hosted by Rosalie, Melly and Leanne. Oh, it was so much fun. And the food was fantastic. And the projects were great. And did I mention how great the food was? Crikey. I think I put on 2kgs just from the day alone.

I'd like to introduce you to Mary (left), one of the girls I work with. I tell you, she's awesome! Here we are stitching together, and nattering away too, of course.

I had a wonderful day out, with nearly all the girls from Patchwork with Gail B attending. What a great day out to relax and sew.

All up, there were 8 of us from work, including Gail herself, and Rosalie jumped in for a piccy too.

Well done to the girls for hosting such a lovely day! Can't wait till next year!

Me First! Me First!!

Ok, I'm a bit of a self confessed "Melly and Me" fan over here. I mean, how cute are their gorgeous toys? And not to mention that Melly is such a lovely and generous girl, who has donated alot of fabric for my 'Sew Blessed' missions.

So it was with great excitement that Mellys first range of fabric from Creative Abundance, called "Where the Wind Blows," arrived at work this morning! And guess what? We were the first store in all of Australia to get it! Thanks for dropping it off Melly!

And so I was the lucky girl who got to unwrap the pretty bolts, and cut some into fat quarters. Such fun!

And so. I just had to buy some. How utterley cute is it?! And you know what I realised? I'm the first person to have bought some of Mellys fabric! How cool is that?!!

And to continue with the Melly and Me theme - only 3 sleeps to go till the Immerse Stitching Day!!! Can't wait!

A day of stitching...

As soon as I read about the "Immerse" stitching day on Melly's blog - I knew I had to go! And it seems my excitement may have been a wee bit contagious, because most of the girls from work (Patchwork with Gail B,) are now coming too! I think there are about 8-10 of us going on the Sunday (19th of September), and I have a feeling we may be the noisest table there!

For those who haven't heard, Melanie Hurlston, Rosalie Quinlan and Leanne Beasley are having a stitching day at Immerse winery in Dixons Creek. And it's going to be so much fun! The three of them have been showing some 'sneak peek' photos on their blogs, and they all look fab. Which I know will present a slight problem - in that I'm a very indecisive person. How am I going to choose which project to do on the day??! Thankfully we get all three projects fully kitted, but still. It's going to be a tough decision!

So, is anyone else going to the Immerse day??

Also, a quick note to those rather patient individuals who have been asking me about the Stringybark Farm BOM. Wow. I know. I have been so terrible with this, and I feel awfully ashamed and guilty. I'm so sorry girls!! There are still a few more stitchery blocks to come, but I really can't see myself having the time to do it at the moment. And I want to do this justice. I don't want to do a half quality job, just to get it up and done.

But it's up to you girls - would you prefer if I just finished the last of the drawings and instructions and put them up online now, or would you mind waiting till I can find the time? It's up to you. Maybe I'll do both. I can at least put everything up, for those who want to finish it now. And then hopefully in a few months I'll have some more time to work on it properly. Give me your thoughts!!

Talk about huge excitement this week!

I had a most exciting day on Thursday when the postie dropped this in my letterbox. Yup, the latest issue of Homespun magazine (Vol 11.8), and with my quilt on the cover!! Eeeeee!!

I am thrilled to finally show off, "Lavender Love," a beautiful purple quilt paying tribute to the always popular plant, Lavender. I had such fun designing and making this quilt, and am so happy with the final result. I made this quilt over the summer months, and have been patiently waiting to show you all since!

I must say, it's so exciting to see it in print, and looking all fancy. How gorgeous is the photo setting for the quilt?! I wish I could transplant that lovely arbour into my backyard. It's just stunning.

My mum, is of course, incredibly proud. I think she bought all the copies of the magazine at the local shops - so I'm sorry for any locals who are trying to get their hands on a copy!

And just to add to the excitement - Rebecca Craig (Gails daughter) of Patchwork with Gail B, has finally given birth to her triplets - all girls!! Congratulations to Rebecca and family - can't wait to see them!

New beginnings.

Well. I've been a wee bit busy lately. Actually, more than a wee bit busy. And most of it is due to a boy. *sigh* I have met a most wonderful young man. He is an absolute gentleman, and I am feeling so cherished and loved. So we have been spending most of our time together, getting to know one another. I am loving it. So loving it.

On to sewing news - I have a finished one to show you! Yup, a finish!

I finally have sewn the last of the binding onto my little quilt. This one is made using a turnover of Patisserie fabric by Fig Tree quilts. I love the warmth and colour in these fabrics - they are just delicious. They really are.

I'm quite chuffed with how it has turned out, and I especially love the straight quilting lines. I seem to be using this particular style of quilting alot lately - and I really like it.

So yay- another finish!

And just 'coz I can - here is my darling little niece Alecia. She has grown so much, and is incredibly long. Of course - I still think she is just gorgeous!

Oh, and shhh! Did anyone else notice this little snippet in the current issue of Homespun magazine??!

Well, it seems I'm not alone. I'm not the only one who blames Moda for our lack of money! Maybe we should start a therapy group? One where we vow to be strong and frugal and....yer, I know. It's a lost cause.

So what better way to console my lack of money? To play with fabric of course.

I've had a wonderful time playing of late.

Let's see. I've played with a layer cake. And had fun chopping that up, and then sewing it all back together.

I love this range, "Objects of Desire" by Sandy Gervais. It's so bright and happy.

Am planning on backing it with these pretty pink and white spots. Love it.

I've also been playing with a jelly roll (I'm doing a great job of blaming Moda, aren't I?) This is another of my favourite ranges, "Celebrate Spring," also by Sandy Gervais.

And a friend of mine comissioned a wee little playmat for her friends sons 1st birthday. These are brilliant playmat panels - just love them.

So yes, things have been rather busy!

Oh, and just an aside and personal note on the homefront. My dad had surgery last week to remove the prostate. Everything went well, and the biopsy revealed that they were able to get all the cancer, and it had not spread to the outside of the prostate. So - great news! Thanks for all your thoughts, prayers and kind wishes. I greatly appreciate it.

Between having a fabulous new niece, and the gorgeous little daughter of the boss at work - I am seriously feeling a wee bit clucky lately. There are babies everywhere - and they are oh, so cute!!
I finally had a hold of Alecia, and she is just darling. Mum and bubs are doing well, and Alecia is quite happy to sit still and watch the world go by, whilst blowing bubbles. Apparently she is quite long, with big feet. Which is not suprising to me at all - as my brother is 6'7" and my sister in law is around 6' herself. I think Alecia is going to be one tall miss!

As soon as I found out she was a girl, I bought some lovely pink waffle fabric from work, and last weekend I made a little blanket for her. Of course, a special touch was added with her name.

I'm so wrapt with how it turned out - and my brother and sister in law love it. Which is even better.
Ok, I hear you. I'm rambling on long enough about my little niece.

Some exciting news!

I am thrilled and delighted to announce that I now am an Aunty!! My dear brother and sister in law have welcomed a little girl into the world on Friday the 11th of June - Alecia Lily. Born by c-section due to a breach at 9:01am, weighing in at 8lbs3oz.

And I know I am probably biased, but she is so adorably cute. I'm not normally a 'mushy' newborn sort of girl - but hey. She's cute. Really cute. I am yet to have a cuddle of her yet (so can't wait!!) but so far mum and bubs (and dad!) are doing well!

Sorry for my lack of blog posts (once again.) But I've actually been sewing! Hurrah! Of course, I've been doing some sewing for my new little neice, but I am yet to take some pics yet.

My latest finish is this quilt, which I made for a lady from my church. This lady, Janice, was a particular great help and encouragement to me with making clothes for the kids in Indonesia. So I have been wanting to find a way to thank her, and what better way than a quilt.

It's a simple design, measuring about 45" square (forgot to measure it before I gave it!) I'm really happy with how it turned out - and I love the back of it. And the quilting.

Thankfully, Janice loves it too!

First off, thank you so very much for your lovely comments following my previous post. It was a wonderful encouragement to read your comments, and personal stories that are close to home about prostate cancer. Our family is coping well, and I think the shock of the diagnosis has finally settled in. I appreciate all your prayers and well wishes, and I'm so grateful for them. Thank you!

Now, don't be shocked - but I actually have some sewing related news to share! Oh my goodness. I know. It's been awhile, hey? See, I always try to make handmade gifts. So of course, as most of you know, it was Mothers Day on Sunday here in Australia. {Happy Mothers Day to all the wonderful mums out there!! Hope you had a fab day!}

So, with the diagnosis of my dad happening last week, mothers day had completely slipped my mind - till 3 days before! Um, help?!

Thankfully, my mum and I had bought a couple of "Faded Memories" Charm packs last year, with the intention of my mum learning to make a quilt for herself. Well, we never got around to it. So I thought I'd make her the quilt anyway!

And how brilliant are the Moda precut ranges? So darn easy and quick. And, you end up with a brilliant result. I love how this little quilt has turned out. And my mum absolutely adores it. She even took it with her to church on Sunday to show it off.

I simply quilted vertical lines on the quilt, spaced about an inch or so apart. And I'm really happy with how it looks. It gives it that wonderful 'crinkly goodness' and has a lovely texture. Me thinks I'll be doing it more often. Oh, the quilt measures 42 x 51". Perfect lap size.

So there you go - I actually started and finished a quilt! Now, don't fall over in shock.

I also just wanted to share a bit of workplace excitment. As most of you know, I'm lucky enough to work at Patchwork with Gail B in Bayswater, Victoria. And at the moment we are celebrating a new extension to our shop. And it looks fabulous!

I just had to take a few photos to share - however my camera makes it look quite dark inside, which isn't the case. The shop is now almost double the original size, and it's so nice and bright and spacious inside.

And a nice bonus is that I've lost 1kg from all the extra walking around the larger shop!

For any locals, we're having a sale at the moment to celebrate the opening of the extension. Lots of great goodies on sale, and it wraps up on Saturday the 15th.

Wish I could make this a happier update post!
I've had to take a bit of a break from my craft and blogging of late. Not just because I've been flat out busy with things, but due to family concerns. My dad has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer, so we are all in a state of shock I think. He has been having tests etc for a few weeks now, but today we just recieved the news.

As you can imagine, sewing is the last thing on my mind at the moment. However, I am sorry for not updating earlier with the measurments for the Homespun Stitch a long. Please forgive me!

I feel like I haven't been doing my blog any justice of late, and I would much rather not post anything than be forever posting 'I'm sorry!' messages!!

Week 7: Tulip.

Yup, I'm back safe and sound from Indonesia! And I had an absolutely AWESOME time. I loved it all, and I actually didn't want to leave. I really love West Papua especially, and the people are just wonderful and kind. I wish I could have stayed a couple of extra weeks!

So, now that I'm back I'm hoping to get into some sewing for myself! I feel like I haven't done any sewing for me for quite some time now. However, this whole 'sewing for me' thing won't last long, I know. I'm going to get back into sewing clothes for a second trip to Indonesia soon.

But I have two Moda layer cakes I'm itching to cut in to, and some charm packs begging to be used.

I've had some wonderful emails from ladies who are doing the Homespun "Give Thanks" Stitch a long! How exciting!

For those who have asked, below is the list of the finished sizes of the blocks so far:

Week 1.

Butterfly. Finished block size is 3" square.
Week 2.
Love Heart. Finished block size is 1.5" square.
Week 3.
5 Hearts. Finished block size is 1.5 x 3."

Week 4.

Family. Finished block size is 2x6"

Week 5.

Angel. Finished block size is 3" square.

Well, it has been wonderful to hear from so many of you who are participating in the Homespun 'Give Thanks' Stitch-a-long! How exciting! I'm looking forward to seeing photos of the stitcheries as they progress along. If you have any photos, and want to share them, please feel free to email them to me.

Now, I had a lady ask if each week I could put up the finished size of each stitchery. There has been a bit of confusion over whether the stitcheries are printing out at the correct size. So, just to make it clear, the stitcheries are actually quite small, and the fabric allowance is generous to allow for ease of sewing in a hoop.

If you would prefer to save on some fabric, maybe try using a large piece of muslin or homespun, and don't chop it up for each individual stitchery. Instead, just draw and stitch each stitchery on the fabric, allowing some room between each one of course.

Below is the finished block size of the stitcheries that have been released so far:

Week 1.
Butterfly. Finished block size is 3" square.

Week 2.

Love Heart. Finished block size is 1.5" square.

Week 3.

5 Hearts. Finished block size is 1.5 x 3."

I have just spent the morning rolling up each item and packing them into the bag. I have so many photos to share with you, but just not the time at the moment - sorry!

Yup, the new Homespun magazine came out, and guess what was in it? My quilt!

Talk about exciting!

So, the Stitch-a-long has begun, and you can check out and download the instructions on the Homespun website. I've already had ladies sending me an email to let me know they are doing the stitch-a-long - yay!

Well, I'm glad at least someone likes my quilt!! I must say, there is quite a bit of nervous apprehension when you do something like this. Must be to do with my fear or failure or something like that.

Anyway, I will be doing some of the Stitch-a-long myself and coming up with some new ways to use the stitcheries, and I'll be sure to share it all with you.

Little bit of this and that..

Well, it's a wee bit hard taking pretty and creative photos when it's rather windy and dark outside. And drizzling with rain. Not that I'm complaining about the rain mind you. I'm so grateful for the rain that we have been having lately.

But I wanted to show you all what's been keeping me busy for the past little while. See, I am heading over to Papua in Indonesia in 16 days time (eek!) to deliver the clothes for my Sew Blessed mission. So I have been madly trying to sew as many things as possible, and that has been taking up any and all of my free time.

Once I'm back I'm determined to get back into the swing of sewing quilts again. I have so many designs running through my head that I want to create!

So yes, I'm getting pretty excited about going back to Indonesia, but also pretty nervous and anxious. There just seems so much to do in so little time! I have no idea how I'm going to be ready in time.

Anyway, just to finish off this post with a little something I have been working on (when I needed a slight break from sewing clothes!) I absolutely love the Patisserie range of fabric by Moda, so this little quilt is made using a Turnover, and some co-ordinating fabric for the strips.

As I said, it's a bit windy outside, so excuse the pics, but I just had to share the yumminess. I think I will leave it at this small size, as it will be perfect to hang on the wall of my future dream house. *sigh* Someday!

Gosh, thank you for all the lovely comments on my previous post! You're all so nice and sweet! I must say, there is a bit of apprehension when your own design comes out in a magazine. The doubts and questions start running through your head - "Did I write everything down correctly? Were there any mistakes? Will anyone actually like it?!!"

My mum is, of course, extremely proud and carries a copy of the magazine around with her at all times. Gotta love a proud mum!

Well, I was going to write up a post earlier on this week, but I lost my camera! *gasp* Well, to be honest, I forgot it and left it behind at my brothers house on sunday. Must be something about forgetfulness and getting old.

Anyway, last saturday I had the immense pleasure of teaching 5 of my young cousins (8-14yo) how to make a patchwork quilt! And what a day we had. They all arrived at 9am, and I had 4 sewing machines set up. My aunty bought with her another machine, and soon we were stuck into it. And the girls took to it like ducks to water. I had already cut all the material up, and decided to go with simple 8" square blocks.

So after a quick lesson on how to use the machines, (most of the girls had never used one before,) they were soon motoring along and having a wonderful time! Each girl sewed their own quilt top, and then helped my aunty and I put them together with the quilting and binding.

So, one very busy day later, we managed to complete 3 quilts, with the 4th one only needing the binding sewn on, and the 5th one a complete quilt top. The girls were wrapt and then wanted more fabric to create bits and pieces with. So, they sewed bags and dolls and let their imagination run wild! It was so wonderful to see their creativity blossom. And of course, they all wanted to come back next week!

When they all went home at 5:30, I think I sunk into a chair and didn't move for an hour or two!

Homespun Brag

Yup, 'tis time for a shameless brag.

Almost this time last year I had the immense pleasure of receiving an email from Catherine Sanchez, the editor of Homespun magazine. Having seen my blog, she asked if I would be interested in designing something for the magazine. Um, YES!

Well, I had the latest issue (Vol 11.2) arrive on my doorstep the other day, and lookie what I found on page 133.

The quilt is titled "For these I give thanks," and features a number of stitcheries all based on things to be thankful for. I won't give too much away, as this is just a 'pre-release' sort of thing, as the quilt comes out next issue. It will be a web based project and Homespun is releasing it as a Stitch-a-long for 23 weeks.

So, it is all rather exciting!!

Well, that's what we are calling ourselves at work. All the staff have been making aprons to wear to work. Not only do they protect our clothes from all the fabric fluff (chenille...I'm talking about you!) but they look awfully cute, and inspire the customers to make them too.

So this is my cute apron that I wear to work. Please excuse it looking a tad wrinkly. I just gave it a wash and only a quick iron. *tut tut* Shows off my poor ironing skills, doesn't it??

But, never mind. I just love the fabric, which has threads and pins and needles all over it. Too cute.

Well, of course when my mum saw my apron - she wanted one too! She chose a fabric from the same range as mine, and it just suits her perfectly. Very feminine.

Oh, and she's been wearing hers to do the food shopping!! I was a bit stunned when I heard, but apparently she has recieved plenty of admiring comments. She's always been one for starting new trends.

By the way, the pattern for this apron comes from the book, "A is for Apron," by Nathalie Mornu. Which is a fabulous book full of apron patterns. I highly recomend having a flick through it sometime.

It's definately time for an apron revival - so come on girls! Drag out those pinnies or make a new one!

Thought I would share what's been keeping me a bit busy the past month or so. Well, actually, I can't really show it to you. Infact, this is all I can, and will show you.

You'll just have to trust me on this, and wait for August.
But, I can show you a bit of the back. I used a Signature varigated thread to stipple quilt this quilt, and I love it. Am so happy with how it turned out.

I've also been doing a bit of spending of late. We had a new range of fabric come in at work, Boutique by Chez Moi for Moda. Devine fabrics. Just devine. So I snapped up a few fat quarters, though I could easily have bought a Layer Cake. I may still do.

I've also been doing some random purchases of things that have caught my eye.

What am I going to do with it all? No idea yet. Just had to have it.

And by the way, how adorably cute are these turtles?!!

We had an end of year break up party for work a few weeks back. We went bowling, and I am most pleased to report that I came 3rd out of the staff! And I won a prize!

Don't you just love that the prize for a patchwork shop break up party is fabric?!!

This is the 'Animal Alphabet' range by Moda. And it's so cute!

So, I am going to be making a playmat for my new neice/nephew in June. Can't wait to be an aunty!

Stringybark Farm BOM

Well, here are 3 very overdue and long awaited blocks for the Stringybark Farm BOM. Once again, my apologies for not getting around to this sooner. Thank you to those who have emailed me regarding the BOM as you kept reminding me to 'hurry up!'

So, here we have 3 more blocks for the BOM - Blocks 6, 7 and 8. I haven't actually sewn them yet as I just don't have the time at the moment unfortunately. But hopefully these drawings will do. Please feel free to email me or leave a comment if you have any questions at all regarding the blocks and design. There are two more final blocks, and I'll finish drawing them over the next week or so.

So, Block 6 is Harold and Susie, two sheepish residents of the farm. They like nothing better than to stand under the old windmill and watch the world go by, whilst snatching a few mouthfuls of lush grass of course! Then we have Miles and Pepper, two very cheeky, and very naughty barn cats. They never stray far from the bales of hay where the field mice play and hide.

And finally, we have Farmer Jack and Betty in Block 8. Their little wooden house is a simple affair, but a very happy home indeed. And whilst Farmer Jack tends his farm, his doting wife Betty is very happy in her garden.

Once again, I'm really sorry! I'm really quite annoyed at myself that I haven't been able to give this the time and attention it deserves. But life has gotten in the way quite a bit over the last few months, and that takes precedence over sewing luxuries!

Edited to add: Just to answer some questions I have been asked. Blocks 6 and 7 need a 4.5 x 6.5" piece of cream homespun. Block 8 needs a 4.5 x 10.5in piece. Unfortunately the pictures did not scan in at the correct size (technology these days... *sigh*) but I tried to get the designs as close to the correct size as possible. Hopefully it will work out fine. :)

Well, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas season, and a great New Year!

I have been away on holidays recently over in Berri, South Australia, visiting family. It was very hot over there, so we went swimming in the beautiful Murray River, which was just devine! I love swimming in rivers and lakes!

I unfortunately got sick with the flu whilst I was over there and celebrated New Years Eve by going to bed at 10pm, and sleeping all of New Years Day!

Me, at Mildura Airport, waiting for my brother and sister in law to pick me up.

Thankfully I am better now, though I badly injured my ankle last saturday, whilst skiing up at Lake Eildon. I accidently rolled my ankle down a rut in the ground, and an old piece of timber jabbed into my ankle. Well, I won't give you the gory details, but alot of blood and a tetanus shot later, and I'm finally starting to walk on it without too much pain!

So yes, things have been rather busy of late!

This pretty little doll was one project I was madly trying to finish before the end of the year. A friend, Julie, had comissioned it for a friends daughter and I needed to have it done before I went on holidays. Please excuse the shocking photos, but I ran out of time to take any good ones.

And now, time for a well deserved Stringybark Farm BOM update! *hangs head in shame* Gosh, things have just been so busy I haven't been able to give this the time and attention it deserved. I do apologise to those who have been so patiently waiting for the next blocks. I'm so sorry!

What I will do is finish the drawings for the final blocks, and put them online asap. That way you can all complete your blocks if and when you want to. I will eventually finish the BOM quilt, but it is unfortunately a bit far down on my 'To Do' list at the moment.

So, as soon as I finish this post, I will get out the drawings and finish them off. Hopefully I can have them all scanned in by the end of the week. Sorry again girls! *smacks hand*

Well December has just flown by.

Talk about an extremely busy month.

Anyway, just a quick post to wish you all a wonderful, happy and blessed Merry Christmas! I hope you all have a lovely season with your family, friends and loved ones - and stay safe on the roads!
I have lots of exciting things to share with you, but it will have to wait till I have some spare time in the new year unfortunately. I'm sure you are all just as busy as I am!

Till then, check out this spunky little pony. I made him as a chrissy present for my Godson, Zac, and I just adore this little pony!

He is actually meant to be a Reindeer, and is a pattern by Melly and Me. But since my friend Emma and Zac love ponies, I decided to alter him slightly.

I especially love his ric rac mane, and I put elastic in his tail so it stretches.

Too cute.

We celebrated my mums 52nd birthday last week. My mum and I are extremely close, and she loves anything and everything I make. So of course, I knew it would be a handmade gift for her this year. She is a big blue and white fan, to the point of having a blue loungesuite, blue walls all throughout the house, and the majority of her wardrobe is blue. She also collects blue and white plates, and other bits of china.

So when I saw this delft blue and white house fabric at work the other day, I knew my mum would just love it. After a quick trip to the $2 shop for a wooden frame, which I painted white, we ended up with a lovely picture.

I also made this little wallhanging the day before her birthday. I tried a different technique with this piece, and actually put the quilt together and quilted it, before I even used my free motion foot to randomally stitch the daisy flowers. I love how it's turned out though, and the cute simplicity of it.
We also had some exciting news to celebrate on my mums birthday. We found out that my brother and sister in law are expecting their first baby!!! I am so excited that I am going to be an aunty, and of course, my mum and dad are overjoyed at being grandparents. I think my mum jumped up and down and cried! So I have till June to make heaps of baby quilts and goodies!!

Just some musings..

There isn't much else to share with this post. Well, I do have stuff to share, but I've just been so busy lately - almost too busy to sew! *gasp*

But I just wanted to share a photo I took the other day. My parents and I drove up to Marysville a few weeks back. I'm sure most of you will know that the town of Marysville was devastated by the Black Saturday bushfires back in February.
I have been a regualr visitor of Marysville since I was a little girl, and I just love that town. I have so many fond memories of picnics and games by the river, and exploring the town. So I was at a complete loss when I went back and saw how empty and hollow the town is. What was once a busy tourist town with hundreds of houses, is now basically bare paddocks. I completely lost my bearings and found myself confused as to what street I was on. And standing there, in the middle of the town, I just felt this immense sadness and grief in the air. So many people lost their lives or their homes that day, and it was like the town was grieving.

But a strong resilience was shining through. For where a house once stood, beautiful bulbs were growing through the soil and starting to flower. These precious bulbs survived all the devastation, and were now providing splashes of colour to the blackened landscape. It really encouraged me that there is always hope, and there is always life.

I have to share my excitement with you!

I just had to take advantage of the Aussie dollar being so strong of late, and so I made my first purchase from the US!

I got quite a few items from the Fat Quarter Shop that were on sale, and so including postage I think I saved around $80! Which is alot of money! I mean, if you put it in fabric perspective that's 22 fat quarters!

Talk about major excitment when it arrived a week later in a big box, all the way from the States. I've been admiring it so much that I didn't have a chance to post about it earlier!

So, I treated myself to a Glace Jelly Roll, a Patisserie Turnover and a yard of coordinating fabric, and a bundle of 19 Ginger Blossom Fat Quarters from Michael Miller. Which ended up costing only $1.60 per fat quarter!!

So I didn't go extravagent or extreme, but I am thoroughly pleased with my purchases, and I cannot wait to start using them. That's the problem though. I want to use them now. Not in a few weeks time when I've finished other projects. But now.

And yes, I will certainly be purchasing more as long as the Dollar stays strong!

I also had a lovely suprise in the mail last week. Back at the beginning of the year I joined in a Medallion Quilt Round Robin swap. So all through the year I have been recieving other ladies quilts and adding a border on. Well, I finally got mine home!
And so here it is!

I asked for a predominately white quilt featuring the red, blue, yellow and green fabric colours in my center square.

I'm really happy with the result, which was totally different to what I was expecting! So a big thank you to all the ladies who participated in my quilt top. You've done a fabulous job!

Yellow Fever

Well, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who likes yellow! Being such a happy colour, I think it's impossible not to like it. Quite a few of you are now keen to make your own yellow quilt, so I'm happy to hear you have been inspired.

As for me, I've been busy cutting.

There is nothing nicer than a stack of squares, all neatly cut up and just waiting to be sewn.
And, how's this for fabric cheerfulness?? All the sewn squares blissfully blowing in the breeze.

And slowly being sewn together. I love this simple little block.

I just can't get over how happy these blocks are making me feel! I was seriously sitting there with a big smile on my face as I was sewing!

So can you tell it's been a bit of yellow fever here lately? I even bought a bundle of yellow flowers from the nursery and potted them up.

And just to spread the 'yellow cheer,' the winner of the yellow fatquarter is Jeanette from QLD! Congratulations Jeanette! I hope you enjoy using it and I'll be in touch shortly.

And finally - I won something!! The wonderfully talented Natalie Lymer from Cinderberry Stitches was having a giveaway of her latest pattern. And yup, I won a copy! I'm awfully excited as I just love Natalies designs. I can't wait to start sewing!

What's wrong with yellow?

I've seen blue quilts, pink quilts, red quilts and green quilts. I've seen blue and yellow quilts, or purple and yellow quilts. But I've never seen an all yellow quilt. This thought struck me the other day, quite out of the blue, and I've been thinking about it ever since.

Why don't we use yellow as the predominant colour in our sewing? I'm sure we all love yellow, I mean, it's the colour of happiness! It's a bright and cheerful colour, and you can't help but smile when you're surrounded by yellow. Nature uses yellow in abundance, from the bright sun, through to the sand on the beach, and all the hundreds of yellow flowers.

Perhaps, a whole quilt in yellow is just too much of a good thing? Maybe yellow is great, but only in small doses? Well, I intend to find out.

So I've issued myself a challenge. To create a quilt entirely using yellow coloured fabric. No pink. No green. No blue. No nothing else but yellow.

And I was quite suprised when I raided my stash and realised I actually had alot of yellow fabric. And not only yellow fabric, but yellow fabric that all went with each other. I only ended up buying 2 small bits of yellow from work, just to add to the pile.

So, my goal? To turn this pile of sunshine fabric into something pretty. Something that doesn't make one reach for the sunglasses. But a quilt that does justice to the beautiful colour.

Well, that's the plan anyway. I guess we will only find out in time whether a full yellow quilt actually looks good or not!

Passport Holder, and other bits...

A friend of mine turned 30 last Saturday, and as usual, I had left things to the last minute. On Wednesday I suddenly remembered, but rather than rushing down into town to buy something, I really wanted to make her something. She has just come back from 2 months of teaching English in Indonesia, and is planning on going back soon. So I thought a passport holder would suit her perfectly! Thankfully I have my own passport to measure, otherwise I would have been a bit stuck.

But, half an hour later, and voila! One passport holder, ready to go. I 'prettied' it up a bit with the ric rac and light blue fabric on the front.

Well, this is part of what has been keeping me so busy of late. A very good friend of mine asked if I could make 2 baby quilts for friends of hers. In 2 weeks. So of course, I looked at my immensly busy schedule and said yes. As you do!

So the first one was for a little girls 1st birthday, who likes pink, purple and ponies! So here we have, Lillys Quilt.

I really love the fabrics I picked for the pink and purple in this one, and I think it looks quite cute - if I do say so myself. I designed and drew it up myself, and this one measures about 40" sqaure.

The second one was made from an awesome car playmat panel we sell at work. Simply needed to add the little boys name to the bottom corner and quilt and bind it. I love these playmat panels! Finished size is about 36x43" square.

Another very good friend of mine asked if I could make her a cow themed wallhanging for an aunt for Christmas. So, after a bit of designing and drawing, this is the finished result.

Measures about 22" square from memory, and didn't take long to make at all.

We have been incredibly busy at work of late with the Brisbane Craft show on this week, so I'm looking forward to a day all to myself tomorrow to sit and sew! *sighs*

Stringybark Farm - Block 5!

Yes, it's here! It's actually here! First of- apologies for a number of things. The block isn't entirely stitched and finished, and it's awfully late. My goodness, I'm not setting myself a good example here am I?

Oh well, slightly incomplete and a bit late, nevertheless - introducing The Piggery! Yes, you all guessed right. Those cute little ears belong to these trio of piggies!

Here we have Claudia, Penelope and Clive! They share a little pen near the barn at Stringybark Farm, and live quite happy lives. Well, you would too if you enjoyed wallowing in mud, eating lots of food, and generally lazing about. Claudia, Penelope and Clive were born from the same litter, and were a present to Farmer Jack from his rather dotty and slightly crazy sister, Imogen. Originally intended for a christmas lunch, Jack and Betty found themselves quite attached to this trio of troublesome piglets, and decided to keep them as pets.
They love chowing down on leftover scraps, and like nothing better than a good belly rub, whilst lying in the sun.

...It is actually a new post! *gasp* I know, I am just as shocked as you are! My dear friends, please accept my sincere apologies for not posting earlier. I can't believe it's been over two weeks since I've updated my blog! *cries*
I don't want to bore you with my excuses, but lets just say it's been one thing after the other.

I feel terrible that I haven't posted the next Stringybark Farm block, and to confess, I haven't even had time to finish stitching it yet. Which is why I haven't posted it. But I realised that that isn't fair on any of you, so I will pop the pattern and info up asap. Well, as soon as I find the drawing for the next block. I swear I left it in my sewing room, but it's trotted off somewhere else. So as soon as I find it - the next block will be up!

I have some exciting things to show you, and photos and ideas to share, but right now I better go hunt through my sewing room and find the missing drawing!!

Purple Yumminess

Remember this stack of cut squares?

Which used to be this stack of Fat 8's?

Well, after taking out some of the greens, and adding in another cream and purple, I finally took the plunge and started cutting and sewing.

I had this momentary, "Egads! What have you done silly girl!" thoughts, but pushed them aside...

And kept cutting...

And sewing. Till a Dissapearing Nine Patch emerged.

Sixteen blocks later, and then the decision... sashing, or no sashing.

Sashing. Most definately a yes to sashing.

And I love it. I seriously cannot wait till it's finished. Now all I need to think of is a name. Any ideas?

Please excuse me whilst I bawl my eyes out. My mum and I have just finished watching the movie, "A walk to remember," and whilst it was a beautiful love story and a funny movie, it was also terribly sad! I don't do sad movies very well. I sobbed for hours after watching "The Notebook," and even shed some tears at the end of "Ladder 49!"

Oh well, at least these little beauties will bring a smile to my face.

I keep buying more fat quarters of the Minny Muu range. I seriously can't resist their cute little prints and bright colours. What am I going to do with them? No idea. Just had to have them.

Oh! I also had a most wonderful suprise yesterday when Leah from Minimonty introduced herself to me at work! Here I was showing her a quilt kit with no idea it was her, till she said something. It was lovely to meet you Leah, and your mum, and two gorgeous kiddies! I hope you have fun playing with your fabrics and goodies!

Stringybark Farm - Block 4

Without further ado, I would like to introduce you to Henry! He is our lovely block 4 in the Stringybark Farm BOM.

Henry is a wee bit shy, and likes to keep to himself. He can usually be found standing under his apple tree at the top of the paddock. He is getting on in age now, and likes his peace and quiet, though he is more than happy to help Farmer Jack in any way possible. Just don't ask him to spend time with the chickens - he can't stand them and all their noise and fuss! He enjoys spending time with Bill the Scarecrow, and they have quiet chats about the farm and life in general.

Henry is a happy sort of chap, and likes his simple life, especially the leftover homemade bread that Betty often brings him!

Last Sunday I had a wonderful opportunity to meet some lovely and talented women from the Handmade Magazine Craft Forum. Now, if you aren't a member of the forum - go join! We have alot of fun, and participate in a wide variety of great swaps.

Anyway, I had a lovely afternoon meeting Vicki, Sharon, Glenys, Trish and Gina, and sharing show and tell, and chatting about, well, craft!

But we did have an alterior motive for the meeting, which was unknown to Vicki. You see, Vicki organises the majority of the swaps on the craft forum, and puts in alot of her own time and effort to do this. So, we thought it would be nice to thank her - so we made her a secret quilt!

And on Sunday, we suprised her with it. And she was suitably awe struck and amazed!

I hope you get many years or enjoyment from it Vicki!

Onto other news, block 4 in Stringybark Farm is coming tomorrow! And only 5 more posts till my giveaway - excited, much?

How cute are these little cards?

I got the idea from here, (who, by the way makes amazing clothes for kids. Check out her blog!)
The cards are so simple and quick to make. All it takes is some fabric scraps, a boring plain card, and some sewing and creativity. I love the effect and result, and will be sure to make some more from now on.

And, check out the little scrap of fabric I added on the inside. Love. it. Is anyone else feeling reminded of a jam jar from a school fete??

Block 4 in Stringybark Farm will be released this week, so keep an eye out for it! Here is a little sneak peek of the block. What do you think it is??

There was a Pearl button, hiding under the knitting needle, and Ribbon! I've circled the pearl, and the two different ribbons in the picture above. Yes, I know the pearl was a rather cheeky and hard to find item!

I love playing games, especially 'I spy' on a long drive. So, who want's to play a game, with a slight twist? Come on, let's have some fun!

In my box of creating goodies there are two items that I spy. Your job? To guess those two items.

Like most women, especially of the 'craft orientated' variety, I love a bargain! I've just come back from the 3 day sale at Patchwork with Gail B, where I could have bought the whole shop. If only...

But I have come home excitedly with these 3 little beauties....

Instead of $51 for all three Cornucopia charm packs, I got them for a total of $27. Words aren't suficient to express how ecstatic I was, and still am.

I also bought this darling bundle of joy, the Faded Memories range. Which is one of my all time favourite fabric ranges. Instead of $25, it was down to $18.

My problem though? I want to use them. Now. Nevermind what other projects I have on the go. Must be patient. Which is unlikely.

You know what I also love, apart from sales at patchwork shops?

Stringybark Farm - Block 3

It's here!! It's here!

Better late than never, I would like to introduce you to Bill the scarecrow. He is quite happy that he finally gets his debut into the Stringybark Farm BOM, even after months of waiting patiently!

Scarecrow Bill has a very important role at Stringybark. A farm isn't a farm without a vegie patch, and a vegie patch isn't complete without a scarecrow! Whilst Bill is a jovial sort of character, he takes his job of guarding the vegie patch very seriously. He is more than happy for you to stop by for a chat in the sunshine, but don't disturb him when there are birds around, as he is busy at work!

He takes great pride in his important role, and has been apart of the farm ever since Farmer Jack was a little boy. Scarecrow Bill has seen alot of change over the years, so often the farm animals turn to him for wisdom and advice. Whilst he may look a bit worn on the outside and frayed around the edges, he has a heart of gold. Which may be because of the yellow straw he is stuffed from!

What are you working on?

So, what's your current project that you are working on? Or maybe, like me, it's a few projects on the go at once!

I'm currently working on an important project that I can't reveal just yet, though I would dearly love to! But some little photos shall have to do for now.

Let's just say, this project is testing and improving my stitchery skills, which were rather lacking to begin with. I'm quite enjoying it, though I'm at the stage where I just want it finished!

Please feel free to post and share what you are working on at the moment! I would love to see!

Well, I had a great day at the craft show on Thursday. I worked at the $3.50 fat quarter stand for Patchwork with Gail B in the morning, and then I was free to wander the show. Whilst everything was so tempting to buy, I only bought some gemstone pendants and beads for some jewellery. I can't go past something that glitters and is wearable!
Speaking of "Gail B's," we are having a big sale on next week (July 30-August 1st), so if you are in the area, make sure you drop by!

But I have to share my new 'fabric love,' which is the Minny Muu range. How cute are these 3??

I nearly bought a fatquarter of each piece in the range yesterday - I just LOVE them all! I think it's the bright pretty colours, and the small delicate patterns. To me, it's just edible! Infact, I think I might have to go back and buy some more next time.

And to those patient and wonderful people waiting for block 3 in the Stringybark Farm BOM, it's coming soon! The project I mentioned above has taken utmost priority at the moment as I'm working to a deadline, but I'm nearly finished stitching block 3, and should have it ready next week. Thanks for your patience, and I'm sorry for the delay.

The Melbourne Craft and Quilt fair is on again this week, running from the 23rd till the 26th of July, at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
I will be there on Thursday, helping to run the Patchwork with Gail B stall, from 9:30 - 1:30pm, so if you are there, please feel free to drop past and say hello! I will more than likely be wearing a black top, and I have long blonde hair. Don't be shy!

And good news, Block 3 in the Stringybark Farm BOM is coming soon - I promise!! Things have been a bit chaotic here, but I am finally making some progress on my "Things to do" list. If anyone finds those 'extra hours in the day' anywhere, could you please let me know where to find them! Would really appreciate it!!

Introducing...

Whilst I've been resting my back, and taking it easy, I've had a new vision and direction come for my life. Some of you will probably remember me mentioning about the 2 months I spent in Indonesia doing missionary work in 2007. Well, I've been wanting to 'do' something again for awhile now, and I feel I have a new vision, and idea.

So I'm officially introducing "Sew Blessed." I have a desire to make beautiful handmade clothes, toys, and blankets for orphans and needy children in Indonesia. I want them to be beautiful items, made with love, and then I want to pack them all up, and fly over personally to deliver them. I am so excited about going back to Indonesia again! I really want to spend a few weeks with the kids, and just bless and love them. I already have a place on my heart, which is Balikpapan in the western part of Borneo. My friend Elisabeth, has just flown there this week to spend a year teaching English in the school and orphanage.

Incase you might have been wondering, I'm still here, and still in the land of the living! Thank you once again for the kind 'get well' comments. I really appreciated it!

The good news is that I didn't fracture my hip (yay!) but I did alot of damage to my back. So I've been taking it easy, and seeing my osteopath regularly, and I'm finally getting back to some sort of normality.

I've been doing some sewing, and creating some bits and pieces. I'm madly working away on my "For these I give thanks" secret project, but I can't show you much of that yet. I've also been working on another project which I will share with you soon. I'm very excited about it, as it's something that is really close to my heart.

I don't know if any of your have ever seen the wonderful dolls created by Katkins Designs? If you haven't, do yourself a favour and check out their website. Talk about pretty dolls! I recently bought one of their doll face stamps, and have been having lots of fun playing with it.

I also got myself some Prismacolour Premier Pencils, and they are fab-u-lous!! Rather pricey, but oh so worth it. They can be heat set, and are then fade proof and water proof. Perfect for colouring on fabric! I'll be sharing more about these soon too.

And guess what? It's my 85th post, which means in 15 more posts I'll be having a 100th post giveaway! How exciting!!

I'm having such a good run of late. *cough*
Yesterday I got bucked off a horse, and landed really badly on my left hip (where I've had numerous problems in the past.) Talk about agony! I haven't fallen off a horse since I was 10 or 11, and I've quickly realised that you don't bounce as easy the older you get.
Have spent the day seeing my osteopath and having x-rays. Thankfully nothing is fractured, but I've messed my back up good and proper (I never do things by halves!) So I'm in quite a bit of agony, and can hardly move.
So once again, this blog is on hiatus for a wee bit!

Am I sensing a pattern here with injuries associated with horses???

Something special

"Craft Hope is a faith-based, love inspired project designed to share handmade crafts with those less fortunate. It is our hope to combine our love for crafting and desire to help others into a project to make a difference around the world."

I have just discovered this amazing mission, Craft Hope. They create handmade items for children in orphanages all around the world. They first made pillowcase dresses for children in Mexico, and then beautiful dolls for kids in Nicaragua. And now they are making booties, blankets and beanies for children in India. And they are asking for anyone and everyone to get involved and help.

This has touched my heart greatly. I spent two months in Indonesia doing missionary work, and living with the locals in remote villages. I absolutely adored the children, and each one found a place in my heart. They are so pure, and so beautiful inside and out. They laugh and smile, no matter what conditions they live in.

I am so eager to get involed with this project, and help out. I can't wait to make some blankets, and share some blessings and love to those who need it most of all. I encourage you to get involved too!

I'm good at procrastinating...

You see, there are so many things I should be doing right now.

I have a looming deadline in a few months, and so I really should be working on some stitcheries.

And I have to make two calico dolls for a friend, using the fabric below. I think the fact that these aren't needed till September is why I keep putting them off. But we all know that September will roll around awfully quick, don't we?

I really should tidy my sewing room, and organise the piles of fabric back into neat organised rows. No, I am not showing you any photos of my messy sewing room, and piles of fabric.

And there are numerous unfinished quilts that I really should finish.

But for some reason, I find myself customising and painting a model horse.

Why? I have no idea.

But, I did manage to do something worth while, and create this fabric folder in 10 minutes. Yes, 10 minutes.
A simple little folder that flips out, with three pockets to hold my design book, my designs, and the blocks in progress. We won't mention the fact that I made this instead of actually stitching the designs inside.

And I had a nice suprise this week when I got the latest Homespun Magazine in the mail. I won a book! Yup, a book! It's called "Stitched for us Folk," by Christine Book Designs, and features heaps of Australian folk style projects.

One that has captured my eye is a Hexagon quilt. I have never worked with Hexagons before, but for some reason I like the thought of creating it with other sewers. I can imagine swapping and sharing hexagons with ladies from all over the world, and then putting our quilts together. How wonderful would it be to have bits of fabrics from ladies in the US or Europe or wherever, in a quilt. What a special treasure that quilt would then be.

How about this for some Hexagon loveliness! They look good enough to eat.

Ok, enough of my procrastinating. I really should get back to work!

Well ladies, I'm back! Once again, thank you for all your kind 'get well' comments. It's been great to read them, and I'm so appreciative!

I finally can get through a day without feeling dizzy or struggling with headaches. I worked for the first time again on Monday, but I think I overdid it and had a throbbing headache all afternoon. But apart from that, I'm getting better - yay! It's amazing how much concussion knocks you around, and effects your thoughts and thinking. Mum was quite amazed at all the silly things I was doing whilst I was sick. I'm still not driving (apart from short local trips,) but I'm getting there slowly. I think I'll be wearing a helmet next time I work with my friends horse!

Anyway, lets get back to some normality! I've missed you all, and I feel a bit out of the loop! I've set aside some time this afternoon to browse all your blogs and catch up.

Time for a Paper Bag swap update! I think nearly everyone has sent their finished handmade items back to their partners, and I hope you all enjoyed being apart of the swap. There are a few things I'm still chasing up on, but it's pretty much been a sucess!

So I wanted to share with you some of the creations that have been made through this swap. If you scroll through some previous posts on my blog you will find some items aswell.

Michelle was a busy girl, and made some great items for Levineke. Check out this lovely folder for Levineke to store all her sewing bits and pieces in. It has pockets inside for all sorts of things, like threads and scissors. Make sure you drop by Levinekes blog to see the other goodies Michelle made her.
I have fallen with love with this gorgeous bag ( yup, another bag!!)that Kris has made for Leah!

Isn't the owl so cute?? Leah loves owls, so it's just perfect for her. Check out Leahs blog for some more photos of the cute bag.

Now, I think this is the first doll that has been made in the swap (correct me if I am wrong!) And this gorgeous little girl was made by Jantine for Tracey. She is a sewing themed doll, with embroidered pockets, and even a little needlebook, and scissors fob. How cute is she??

And check out what Tracey made for Jantine. She used Lynette Andersons stitchery design for the Breast of Friends, and made a beautiful wall hanging. How clever is she?? Thank you for all your kind get well messages from my previous post! It's been such a joy and encouragment to come online and recieve these messages, so thank you very much.

It's been a week since the horse hit me, and I am still unwell with my concussion. I went to the doctors on Saturday as I was feeling incredibly lousy. I was nauseous, light headed, had headaches, and was just feeling awful. The doctor wanted me to take a week off to rest, and said that I should be feeling better by Wednesday, which was yesterday. Well I'm not. I couldn't go to work yesterday, and I still have terrible headaches, and feel so dizzy. The doctor had said that if symptoms persist I could have a leaking blood vessel in the brain, and I'll need scans. Talk about scary. So I don't want to take any chances, and I'm going back to the doctors this afternoon.

I just wanted to update you all on my condition, and what's happening. I haven't been doing much, and as a result, Block 3 of Stringybark Farm will be delayed. I will do a better update post on the Paper Bag swap when I'm feeling a bit brighter.

Just a quick post to say that I'm unwell, and won't be on here for a few days I don't think. I was working with my friends young horse yesterday, and got hit in the head. I have a mild concussion, and was starting to feel better this morning. But after going into town to post a parcel, I feel crook and horrible. I think I did too much too soon. So off to bed for me!

And just because I don't like a post without a photo, here is one of my horse Charlie and I. He is my best friend, and have owned him since he was 8 months old. Not very craft related I know, but he is a very important part of my life. :)

Must be the day for getting pressies!

Isn't the postman nice to deliver not only my swap item from Maree today, but to deliver Maree hers too?!! Such fun that we both got ours on the same day!

So now I can finally reveal what I made for Maree! I've been wanting to show you all for weeks now!

These are the items that Maree sent me.....

...and this is what I made...

Yup, another bag!! haha! I made the bag first, and then had stuff left over, so made the table runner.

The first thing that shouted out to me about Marees fabric was 'cherries,' hence the cherry fabric, and appliqued cherry. I hope you like cherries Maree!

The fabric is one of Marees favourites, so I had to use the selvedge, and I think it looks really funky! I love the red ribbon with it too, which can be gathered together to 'close' the bag.

But wait, that's not all! The bag is actually reversible! So whenever Maree gets tired of one side, she can get a fresh new look just by turning it inside out. The green ribbon was one of the items Maree sent, and it was just long enough to gather the bag too!

I call this my 'shabby chic' side!! I had such fun playing with this side of the bag and coming up with something a bit different! I completely made up the design for the whole bag as I went along, and followed no pattern. I find that's the best way that I create- just by making it up as I go.

I also made a little circle of fabric and stitched a capital 'M' (for Maree obviously!) and a flower on the back, then attached it to the bag. But I think I forgot to get a photo of it!

The table runner is simply squares sewn together, with an applique center. I actually cut out one of the flowers from the green fabric of the bag, and used that for the applique.

And then I added some of the buttons Maree sent, and the red ric rac. I also used the ric rac on the bag.
I've heard from Maree that she loves the items and is really happy - so big sigh of relief from me!! I had so much fun making these items for Maree, as she is such a lovely person, and it's been a joy to get to know her over this swap.

Guess what arrived at my door just as I was finishing my previous post?!! A package from Maree! Yup, my paper bag swap item!

And wow, wow, wow! It's fantastic! Maree has done such an amazing job, and I'm so thrilled with the results. Here are the bits and pieces that I sent her....

And this is the result! A gorgeous wall hanging, that has a beautiful stitchery on it, a fantastic pin cushion (I've been admiring that design for ages!), some very cute farm yard cake decoartions and two sachets of coffee!!

Haven't I been spoiled?!! Here is a better picture of the wallhanging. I love the colours Maree has used with my fabric, and the stitchery design is lovely.

The amount of detail in here is incredible! Check out those fantastic and neat stitches!

I LOVE this little flower that is attached to the wall hanging! It says, "Missymacks paper bag swap 2009." Maree said I could take it off if I wanted to, but no way! I love it and it's staying!

The pincushion is just amazing, and once again, Marees work is just lovely. It's going to have pride of place on my sewing table!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Maree!! You have done such a beautiful and wonderful job, and I love it all so much. I'll treasure it always!

Now I'm off to have a cup of coffee, and 'ohh and ahh' over my treasures a little more!

Well there are paper bag swap parcels flying all around the world at the moment! How exciting is that?!

Check out the amazing items that Erika made for Beatrice! There is a beautiful wallhanging, which has so much stitching and detail! It looks fantastic.

And Sandra has recieved her swap item from Jessica, who made a lovely bag with funky paisley stitching on the front, a notebook, and this groovy little owl! How cute is he?! I just want to cuddle him!

Hurrah! I have finally finished my Paper Bag swap items for Maree! Can I show you them? Nup, not yet! You, like Maree, shall just have to be patient and wait a few days! I'm really happy with how it all turned out, and I just hope that Maree will like them. Mum wants to keep it, as per usual, so I'll have to quickly get it into the post tomorrow before she becomes too attached.

Meanwhile, check out the gorgeous items that Leah has made for Kris! Here is one of the items - a fabulous bag! I really like how Leah has predominantely used the linen, and then stitched it with the red stitching around the top, and handles. It really looks so striking. I must say, I love red and cream/white together.

The pink one on the left is from the Aviary range by 3 sisters for Moda, the center three are Somerset Cottage by Robyn Pandolph, and the last one is a cream quilters muslin. Do you think they look good together? I ummed and ahhed over them for about 30 minutes, trying to decide. I'm quite happy with them, and I really like the soft, feminine pallete, but are they too soft?

Oh, if you are wondering what they are for, well, it's for a secret project that I can't divulge on just yet. Oh, I'm horrible aren't I?

Usually I never win anything. Period. Whatever competitions I enter, whether it be for holidays to Canada, or shopping trips, or new cars, I never win.
But you know, something must be changing! Last post I mentioned the cute tin and fat quarter I won from Gail. Well, blow me down, but I won something else from Gail! She was having a week of giveaways, and it seems I won two more fat quarters! Who needs a new car, when I just won some fat quarters!

We have some Rustys and Freds to share with you! It seems Stringybark Farm is gaining some popularity which I am just thrilled with! Talk about a buzz when other people like your work and design!! So, please take some time to go and visit Beatrice and see her block 2, and then trot on over to Amy's blog and check out her block 1!

I have had some people asking about what sort of pencils to use for the BOM. I have been using the Derwent brand of pencil, however they are not waterproof. Since it is a small wall hanging, I won't ever be washing it. However, if you want your quilt to be waterproof, I recomend trying the Faber Castell Polychromos Artists Colour Pencils. They have soft waterproof wax leads, and are resistant to smudging. They have acid free, and light fast pigments too.

Or you could always try wax crayons. Simply use an old tea towel to cover your colouring in piece, and then a warm iron over the top. I'll do a tutorial in a few weeks which might be helpful for some.

Figured it was time for a Paper Bag Swap update! How are all you wonderful ladies going?? In just over 1 week and a half, all the items must be sent back to their owners! Gosh - it's snuck up quickly! So please ladies, make sure you send your item on time. I don't want to have to publically name anyone who doesn't complete the swap, but I will!

I have some exciting news that involves a popular craft magazine, and one of my designs! And that is all I shall say on that subject for now, but I shall keep you posted on what is happening!

Maree, from Farmyard Crafts, asked me how I was going with my Homespun Breast of Friends blocks. Very slowly is my response! I have finished the first four blocks, but the fifth one is a BIG one. And so it has unfortunately slid down on my priority list sadly! But I have been reinspired, and now that block 6, 7, 8 and 9 are released- I really need to get moving!!

This was my Block 4, that I did a month or so ago now.

We are selling the Breast of Friends fabric kits at work, (Patchwork with Gail B,) for anyone that is interested. It is a pack with the "In the Pink" range of fabric, and enough to make your quilt. It's gorgeous stuff in real life, and is incredibly popular! And we also have 'scrap bags' of the fabric, if you want some bits and pieces to throw in.

It's raining today, and freezing cold outside, so it sounds like the perfect day for sewing! I better keep moving with Maree's paper bag swap item!

Stringybark Farm - Block Two

Here it is!

Block 2 in my Block on the Month!

Welcome to The Hen House! Please, I would like to introduce you to Fred the Rooster, his two faithful hens Vera and Ginger, and their cute chicks. A farm is not a farm without a rooster and some hens, and Fred knows all too well that he is of utmost importence to Farmer Jack and Betty. Well, at least he thinks he is of utmost importence. He tends to take his role rather seriously, and insists that he is responsible for waking up the farm at 6am every morning. Even though he has a rather plump belly, he struts his way up to his favourite fence post, and lets out a loud, "Cock - a - doodle - dooooooooo!!" And not just at 6am either, but whenever he feels it is necessary, or basically whenever he wants to.... No one would dare hurt his feelings by telling him to be quiet.

Vera and Betty are firm friends, and are happy to put up with Freds obsurdities. They like nothing better than caring for their chicks and pecking for snails in the warm sunshine. They love their home on the farm, and overall, are very happy hens. Except when Rusty the dog thinks it's fun to chase them around the hen house of course. And don't get between them and their food... or their chicks! They are fiercely strong and protective mother hens, just as they should be!

Happy Mothers Day!

I hope all the mothers had a lovely and fantastic day yesterday!

Whilst I am not a mother yet, I do hope to be one in the future. It is such a wonderful gift to be a mother, and I firmly believe that mothers can shape the future of the world, by how they raise their children. They are the next generation of world leaders and changers, workers, helpers, pastors, doctors and parents themselves.

Be proud of the the amazing and high calling you have as a mother, and I pray that you and your family will be richly blessed.

And the stipple quilting leaves a lot to be desired...

And I have no idea what we are going to actually do with it.... Though it looks rather good thrown on the top of the recliner...

But the best thing?

Mum loves it, and that's all that matters.

Mothers Day Present? Done!

busy...busy...busy...

Yes, you will be happy to know that I am still here. I vanished into the deep dark abyss of work, family issues, freezing cold weather, teaching craft classes and looking after my duo of hairy hounds, one fat chub of a horse, and a stubborn little rabbit.
By the time I have done all I had to do, there was simply no time for sewing. *gasp* Could there ever be a more tragic tragedy??

Hence I have had nothing of great importence, or interest, to type up here. But I am more than pleased to report that the clutches of the abyss let go long enough to allow me to do a wee bit of sewing.

Firstly, I am working on two dollies for my friend Julie. She wants them made for her two nieces. I've been putting these off for long enough now, and I really have to get into it. So I have little calico bodies sitting around my sewing machine at the moment, waiting to be turned and stuffed, and brought to life.

I also suddenly realised that Mothers Day is this Sunday! Oh my.... I suddenly had to come up with something to make my wonderful mother as she adores my handmade bits much more than any store bought item. So the calico bodies were put aside and told to wait. "But's it's cold," they complained. "I don't have a face yet" one stated. "I don't have any arms yet," the other whined. I told them to be quiet and learn some patience.

I should have stuck with the dolls and bought mum some flowers. I really should have.
You know what I have learnt? Don't force creativeness and sewing.... It really doesn't end well.

I started off with this appliqued rose I got from a friend, and decided to turn it into a tablecenter/runner thing.

And the result? Well, to be honest, I haven't finished yet. My sewing machine had decided to throw a hissy fit whilst I was stipple quilting it. I lost my patience, and decided to get back to it later.

More on my disastorous mothers day project when I finally finish it. Hopefully by my next post. More to the point, hopefully by Mothers Day. I hope my mum will like it....

Another thing that has been on my mind of late is the Paper Bag swap! Who would have thought May would have come around so quickly?? The items have to be completed and sent by the 31st of May. And truth by told, I haven't really started yet. *gasp* But I have bought some extra fabric, and I know what I am doing. As soon as Mothers Day is over, I shall get stuck into it!

So don't fret Maree! It will be done in plenty of time!

....Autumn. I think it is my favourite season. I really enjoy seeing the leaves on the trees change colours, and the cold nip that comes into the air. The grass starts to turn greener, and everything just looks fresh and clean. No wonder many crafters find inspiration from this season. The colours outside are just beautiful!

We finally had some rain yesterday, and some decent stuff too! I can't help but take photos of water droplets in the sunshine!

Thank you so much for all your birthday wishes from my previous post! Yes, I know I was naughty for not mentioning my birthday before the actual day! But thank you for your kind wishes!

So, what else do I love at the moment? EQ6! You see, this is the pack of Fat Eights I got for my birthday. There are 21 in total, and I just love this colour pallete. Purples, some greens and creams...

So of course, I had to start thinking of what I would actually do with this delicious wad of fabrics. And EQ6 is such a great help for that! Quickly and easily I can put designs together, select colours, and see what the actual quilt will look like. It's so much fun!

So my goal for my Fat Eights quilt is something very simple, with minimal piecing. Something that shows the fabrics, not the complexity in design.

So I started off with just rectangles of 3x4". Of course, the fabrics colours aren't exact, but you get a good general idea.

It made a nice picture, and is quite pleasant, but it's also a bit boring. So then I thought about 4x5" rectangles, and maybe having a space for some simple applique, or stitching in the bottom corner.

Hmm... maybe. I can picture it in my mind, and it looks quite good.

I had seen a quilt just recently at work where all they did was cut big trinagles and piece them together into squares. I really liked the simplicity of the design. So maybe that would work with my Fat Eights? I measured that I could get 4 triangles in total from each piece of fabric, and 2 triangles sewn together would give me a 9" square (or thereabouts...)

And whilst I do like it... I don't love it. Well, at least I don't think I love it. It's very striking....but is it too striking?

But then of course, one can always turn the triangles to create a whole different look and aspect.

And now I am right back where I started. Having no clue which one to go for, if any! Maybe EQ6, as much as I do love it, has also made me more confused with options??!

So, wonderful crafting ladies of blogland, what do you think?? Should I just start again?!

Bits and pieces...

It was my birthday yesterday! I had a lovely quiet day at home with my mum and dad. We went out for lunch to a local restaurant here in Healesville - Wattleseed. It's a great place to go, and the food is delicious, and very large servings. I had a lamb and rosemary pie, and oh - it was so good!

I got some lovely presents yesterday, and they all seemed to have a craft theme to them! I think people know me too well. I got a bundle of fat 1/8's in the purples/creams and greens colour range, and the board game, Stitchopoly from DMC. My friend Cath came over later and suprised me with a craft storage trolley! It will be brilliant to take to the craft class.

Speaking of which, we had our first craft day on Tuesday. We started with some cutting out, and learning how to use a rotary cutter. Most of the ladies hadn't used one before, and unfortunately my old ones are a bit blunt, which made it harder! But they all did really well, and I think everyone now has their bits cut out. We were going to make it a monthly thing, but I reckon we may make it fortnightly.

It's been great to see such a response to my BOM! I'm really quite excited to see some Rusty blocks, and I have also been working on the next blocks.

Anyway, enough from me. I worked at the shop this morning, and now I'm off to go for a walk and enjoy this lovely afternoon.

What a wonderful response to my previous post for the free Block of the Month!! I must admit, I did have thoughts that no one would be interested in it when I was typing it up! So I am so thrilled to see that people are interested! And it was such a joy to see that Beatrice has already stitched her own Rusty block (she called him Patch instead!) Go and have a look at her blog!

I have also just made a little Stringybark Farm BOM button for you blog sidebars. Please feel free to save it to your computer and use it on your blogs.

On Friday I went down to visit my friend Emma, and the new baby Zachary. And I know everyone says this about babies, but he is so gorgeous! He is a solid little lump, and slept the whole time I was holding him. Which is very rare for me and babies. They usually start screaming the minute I have them!
Once I found out the name, I made this little picture. I wrote his name out, and then coloured it in with pencils and back stitched around it in black. Then I sewed some bright and cute fabrics, and of course, I had to include a pony in the top right!

During the week I got Maree's Paper Bag swap items in the mail!! She has sent some gorgeous fabric, and bits and pieces. I already have a few ideas in mind, but I'm going to sit and wait for a bit till I actually start.

I have some wonderful news to share with you all, but I can't say much just yet. But what I can tell you is that I am so excited, and so shocked! I can't wait to share my good news with you all.

Introducing....

Two introductions for this post!

Firstly, a huge congratulations to my dear friend Emma, and her partner Grant, on the birth of their first child, Zachary Mark, this morning! Was a dramatic birth, with the cord wrapped around the bubs shoulders and neck, but I am so pleased to report that mum and bub are both doing well now! A long labour, and 2 weeks overdue, he finally arrived and weighed in at 8 pounds 6.5 ounces. He sure wanted to make a grand arrival! And so now I am a Godmother, which is incredibly exciting!

And secondly, welcome to...

I am so excited to be finally starting my first free Block of the Month Sew Along. “Stringybark Farm" is a wallhanging measuring 24 x 28” roughly. It has 11 stitched panels depicting all those who call the farm their home. I am still finishing designing it now, so there isn't a finished photo of the wallhanging just yet – it will be a mystery! But I can tell you this – it’s cute! It’s a great project to use up your scraps, and it’s very quick, simple and easy. Each month a new block will be released, so there is plenty of time to stitch the block. I did the first block in under a day.

For those wondering, a Stringybark tree is a type of Gum Tree, that are native to Australia. They have a loose stringy bark, hence their name! We have alot of these trees around where I live (and no, they aren't the trees pictured in the photo above!) I just love the name, and it inspired me to create my BOM, and come up with the story of the farm, and all who live there.

So, welcome to Stringybark Farm. This lovely old farm is owned by Farmer Jack and his dear wife Betty. They have a delightful old farmhouse where they raised their 4 children. And although their children have all moved on, they are not alone, for alot of animals call the large farm home. You will get to know more about Farmer Jack and Betty, and all the animals, as we go along this journey. They all have personalities and characters that are just waiting to be shared!

So, without further ado, I would like you all to meet Rusty.

He is very excited to be the first block to be released! Rusty is a young pup, and still has a lot to learn about farm life. He adores Farmer Jack and tries his hardest for him, but he often finds himself more interested in chasing the chickens than doing the farm work. He gets distracted quite easily, and even a butterfly will send him bounding off through the paddocks in chase.
He has a heart of gold though, and loves nothing more than sleeping infront of the wood fire in the farm house. Well, that is when Farmer Jack sneaks him in when Betty isn’t looking of course! Rusty is full of energy, as most young pups are, and is always wagging his tail, and loves making new friends. But don’t get too close, or he’ll lick your nose!

I've been busy!

Well, the observent among you have no doubt noticed our new look! I worked on this yesterday, and I am so happy with the end result! I may tweak a few things still, but I reckon it's good for now. And some of it is thanks to Leni and Rose, a fantastic blog I discovered, where she has good tips and tricks for blogging. So if you want any help to do something similar with your blog, she is the one to go to! I'm also happy to help anyone as well. Now that I know what I am doing! I have done some HTML coding before, but never ventured to do it with my blog. I also love making graphics and headers too, so please feel free to ask if you want something done.

Well, I must say, I am in a bit of a hurry this morning. I have my church ladies morning to go to in....well, *checks watch* ten minutes! Woops... time has slipped away.

But just two quick things I want to mention first!

Patricia from Germany made some fantastically cute cushions using the applique pattern from my '4 Cheeky ponies' tutorial. She did them awhile ago, but I only just found them now! Don't they look great? All of Patricias blog is in German, but luckily for me - my mum speaks German!

Also, as per my previous post, I have been working on my "Sew along," a free Block of the month I'm going to release. And I am so excited about it! As well as 'prettying' up my blog, I worked on the BOM yesterday too. The first block will be released very shortly (hopefully this afternoon,) but here is a sneak peek so far.

Any guesses as to what it is?! I hope you will like it just as much as I do!
